A Cluster-Randomized Trial of a Middle School Gender Violence Prevention Program
This cluster-randomized school-based study will examine the effectiveness of CBIM as a primary prevention for teen dating violence (TDV) and sexual violence (SV) among middle school male athletes. This study seeks to test the effectiveness of the CBIM program with younger male athletes in grades 6-8. The study involves 30+ middle schools in Pennsylvania. Schools will be randomly assigned to either intervention (receive CBIM program) or control (standard coaching, no CBIM program). Surveys will be collected for all intervention and control site athletes at the start of each sports season, at the end of each sports season and after 1 year. The surveys will assess athletes’ changes in attitudes and behaviors about what is abusive behavior, gender-equitable attitudes, intentions to intervene when witnessing abusive behaviors, positive bystander behaviors, and perpetration of violence.
